Community Engagement Officer: Indigenous Ingenuity, Northern Ontario Tour
Sudbury – 2-year placement

Indigenous Ingenuity is a 500m² travelling exhibition produced by the Montreal Science Centre that allows visitors to experience Indigenous culture in Canada through the lens of science and innovation. Throughout the exhibition, traditional Indigenous knowledge and techniques are interwoven with modern science. Visitors can hear bearers of Indigenous knowledge share how their culture is linked with innovation. Using advanced technology, visitors take part in interactive exhibits, challenges, and videos that demonstrate the wealth of Indigenous innovations that are part of our daily lives.

Indigenous Tourism Ontario (ITO) has partnered with Science North to develop and fabricate a 100m² version of the exhibit, designed for ease of travel, installation, and hosting. ITO and NPI/IPN are working with Science North to bring this smaller exhibit to venues throughout Northern Ontario. The goal is to facilitate greater access to this culturally significant, interactive, educational experience. The tour is anticipated to run for two years and will include Science North Bluecoat staff to deliver the visitor experience, along with educational workshops, programs and activities that incorporate Indigenous content which will engage students and their teachers in science, innovation, and culture.

Working side-by-side with the Science North and ITO teams, you will be responsible for identifying and reaching out to as many communities as possible across Northern Ontario. Arranging for the Exhibit tour stops over the course of two years. You will have the opportunity to work alongside Indigenous tourism outfitters. Identifying and aligning offerings to pair with the northern tour. The goal is to use this amazing new resource to promote and expand local Indigenous tourism offerings throughout Northern Ontario. Working with the NPI/IPN team you will track your interactions and the community-based activities, relationships, and tourism offerings that result. You will also lay the groundwork for ongoing relationships between the communities and Indigenous Tourism Ontario (ITO), NPI/IPN and Science North.

You will also work with ITO’s membership and marketing teams, helping to establish long-term relationships between ITO and new communities. This position acts as an important liaison between ITO, NPI/IPN, and Science North on this project. Experience working with Indigenous communities is a must.
